Chapter Twenty-Three

Mia could barely squeeze out the words. “What did you do with my mom?”

Slade cleared his throat, but his voice was still hoarse, strangely distorted. “I want those boys, Mia.”

“They don’t belong to you!”

“Oh, yes, they do. They’re my children. I made them. They belong with me.”

“Leave them out of this! Is my mom alive? Are you going to eat her, you sicko freak?”

“She’s alive. For the time being.”

“So, you want to exchange her for the boys, I guess, huh?”

“You’re a smart girl. Bravo.”

“If I don’t go for it, you’ll eat her. Is that it?”

“Use your imagination.”

“When and where?” The coldness in her belly congealed into an icy chip of hatred.

The boys shifted in the seats behind her.

“I’ll be in touch. Don’t go too far, Mia. You don’t have a driver’s license and you can’t hide from us. Not many people working at Rodriguez Roofing this time of the evening. Tell me where the boys are, and I’ll let your mother—”

The scrabble of pads and claws on asphalt was her only warning. A snarling gray face darted through the open window. Teeth tore into her forearm and jaws clamped tight. Pain shot up her arm and flared into her brain. Green eyes blazed. The jaws pulled her hand off the steering wheel. Deuce lunged across her lap from the passenger seat, a hurtling block of bristling muscle and fangs. Frothing jaws, slashing teeth, spraying spittle, Deuce’s claws heavy, pressing into her legs, scrabbling for purchase as his teeth tore into the wolf’s face. The smell of blood. The terrible squeezing, piercing pressure on her forearm disappeared. The two powerful beasts tore into each other inches from her face, spraying warm droplets. A furry muzzle slammed into her chin, clapping her teeth together. Pain blazed into her vision.

Jace came from behind her, over her, yelling, shoving, punching, clawing. The side door slid open. Footsteps jumped out and circled the van. Two more voices roared. The wolf’s head jerked out of the window. Its snarl turned to a whimper. Deuce tried to scrabble over her, past her, out the window, but she caught his collar. A tearing sound, like soft velvet being ripped asunder, like a turkey drumstick wrenched from a warm bird. The whimper shrilled to a shriek. A sour, wet, metallic stench wafted through the window. Something splatted against pavement.

Mia’s head swam. Her vision blurred. Her arm hurt. Blood plastered her sleeve to her arm. She coughed and rubbed her eyes. Sounds were coming out of her mouth, but she couldn’t gather them into words.

The shrieking stopped and silence fell.

Cicadas in the trees.

The engine purred.

Malcolm and Lee stood beside her door, looking down at something, chests heaving.

Jace’s arm still reached across her. He eased back.

Deuce peered down over the edge of the window. Mia didn’t look. Instead she hugged Deuce with her good arm and kissed his bloody, stubbly face. He licked her face, and she smelled blood again. Then with a last kiss she shoved him back into the passenger seat.
